So what is safeguarding and why is it so important?

In this section we will explore the legal and moral responsibilities.

Snowsport clubs and organisations have a duty of care to children and young people, and safeguarding is an important aspect of this duty of care. This means that organisations should make sure children and young people are safe and their welfare is protected. Effective safeguarding policies and procedures, alongside relevant codes of conduct, are essential in ensuring the duty of care is met.

Duty of care also has a legal meaning which means there are specific requirements defined by law. For sports clubs and organisations, this legal duty of care is covered by health and safety legislation.

Safeguarding in snowsport is the process of protecting children and adults from harm by providing a safe space in which to take part in snowsport.

A key part of safeguarding is spreading the message about keeping people safe and building a culture of always acting in the best interest of everyone in the sport.

An important difference between safeguarding adults and safeguarding children is that, as well as focusing on creating processes and systems to safeguard, there also needs to be a culture that consults with adults on every decision that affects them. Adults can of course make their own decisions, so it’s important to keep them well informed.
